We had a chance to chat with the Artistic Director behind our favourite interior styling blog, The Design Villa.
Louise Roche is an inspiring stylist, photographer, blogger & interior designer with a passion for disrupting the average to create beautiful imagery of living spaces that evoke that feel-good, island luxe vibe. Louise is also a consistent contributor to Adore Home Magazine & No Cure Magazine.
You've said, “life in paradise is all about finding and creating your
very own paradise at home”—where do you draw your
inspiration from when styling?
When styling I draw my inspiration mainly from the products at
hand themselves and often think about the feel they convey to
me and from their I begin building that feeling into a look and
from there things will fall together, its often a sense of trial and
error to bring the right pieces together but often at the right time
the right things appear or jump out at me and the whole look will
start to fall together effortlessly as if it was meant to be, that’s
when the magic happens, if it’s a beachy look sometimes all it
take is a beautiful hint of aqua to bring a sense of tranquility into
a room or set that can spark the creativity.
Do you think styling is learnt, instinctual or a combination of
I think styling is instinctual, it can be learned, but I often find the
best creations happen on instinct alone, on a whim adding this or
that with no real plan in mind is sometimes how it happens.
What advice do you have for aspiring stylists or interior designers
reading this interview?
Passion, passion is the key, if you love what you do you will
succeed, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise we all start
somewhere the more you do something the more you grow, the
more your creativity goes, take risks and go with the flow, you
never know where you may go
Do you believe in styling rules or does breaking them sometimes
make the shot?
Definitely breaking the rules, I’m a big rule breaker where
creativity goes I often start with an idea and end up somewhere
else but in that the magic happens, taking a risk and trying
something new sets you apart from the crowd!
Louise we love the living spaces you style and photograph
because they evoke summery, feel-good vibes, what is it that
excites you about homewares?
I think its the fact one small thing can make a room evok a
feeling of summer for me its my surfboard, if I had told my mum
years ago I wanted a surf board in my room she would have said
what are thinking - :) Today that surfboard in my studio reminds
me of days bobbing around in aqua warm seas whiling away the
day without a care in the world, sometimes we just have to stop
and if that’s all it takes to remember that feeling that its meant to
What are your top 3 styling tips for creating an uplifting space?
A pop of colour that speaks to you
A mix of textures to compliment
And a fab piece of art or at least one unique piece that isnt part
of any trend but a piece that says something to you or something
about who you are.
What is your favourite Art Club Concept piece?
Shakey Palms is so me and my go to cushion :)
As a contributor to Adore Home Magazine what has been one of
your favourite shoots that you have worked on?
Definitely the Paradise Edition, featuring my studio and many
other fab shots, as always it was a pleasure working with Loni on
What do you love most about your job?
Creating beautiful imagery, flexibility in working for myself, being
able to wake up with a mind full of ideas and turn them into
images that inspire.
